Waxed cotton is a great option for wind and water resistant outerwear. Creating a piece that gets better with every wear and after a year looks even better than the day you first made it. Waxed cotton is also very durable and one of the rare fabrics that can be recovered over time. If the wax becomes thin in heavy wear places, you can always have the garment rewaxed and a whole new lease of life is given to the garment.
Just remember though that when you commit to a stitch take your time. Unpicking is not your friend when working with waxed cotton. Once a hole has been created it stays.
 
Not ready for a full garment or want a way to use up scraps? You can incorporate waxed cotton into other makes by creating shoulder yokes, elbow patches, patch pockets or even just a little pocket flap. For the child who never keeps a knee in their trousers or your home DIY bottoms or gardening trousers, you can add knee reinforcements.
